Walking into a Winter Wonderland Classroom!

As a teacher, I know I don’t need to tell you about the weeks leading up to winter break! And the few days before, it can seem like a lost cause trying to get students engaged in any learning. It’s not just the days before the break, but the days you go back in January can be just as hard.

Do you like to do holiday activities whole group? Maybe you set up centers with parents helping students. How about giving some work that students can complete individually? I know one of the hardest things I’ve dealt with in my classroom is having work for early finishers!

Below you’ll see activities for Christmas, but you’ll also see a lot that are winter-theme and work well for the new year. These resources are perfect for reviewing important math, grammar, and writing skills.

MATH — These activities were made with key 3rd grade math skills. If you need differentiation for your 2nd graders who excel in math, these could be a great addition to meet their needs. If you teach 4th grade or higher, these can be fun review or used for those who struggle with math.

This New Year’s collaborative coloring poster is perfect for your winter-themed bulletin board! Students practice rounding to the nearest 100 and use the code to color one of 25 blocks. All 25 blocks make a large poster that is 30 x 30 inches!

WRITING — Your students will enjoy writing with these fun activities. Some are specific to Christmas, while others have a winter theme.

This holiday traditions paragraph writing and craft activity are fun to complete during December. Graphic organizers help students write a paragraph (options for paragraph 2, 3, and 4!) about their favorite holiday traditions. The final craft is shaped and designed to look like an ornament. They look great on a bulletin board!

This FUN descriptive and narrative writing activity is perfect for Christmas/December. Students write creatively from an elf’s point of view. There are graphic organizers to help students organize and choose their ideas.

There are three different ways you can complete the project.

This fun Christmas writing activity gets students thinking about all of the hard work happening at the North Pole. This is a two-part writing project.

  • First, students will brainstorm jobs that might be available in the North Pole. They will pick one job and create a Help Wanted poster.
  • Second, students will review their classmates’ posters and choose one of the jobs listed to apply for. They will write a persuasive letter to the student telling them why they should get the job.
